Sengai served as the abbot of Shofukuji Temple, Japan's oldest Zen temple, established by Eisai Zenji, who also founded Kyoto's Kenninji Temple. In the Zen philosophy, the essence of the universe is symbolically represented through the shapes of the Circle, Triangle, and Square.
