HOW MUSIC HELPS: MUSIC, CHANGE, HEALTH & WELL-BEING
By Gary Ansdell
How Music Helps reaches beyond a conventional discussion of music therapy to examine a larger question: How does music create change within personal experience, relationships, communities, and society?
Writing from a music therapist’s perspective, Gary Ansdell brings together the Nordoff-Robbins tradition, developments in Community Music Therapy, contemporary music sociology, and wider music studies. The result is a broad theoretical exploration of music as an active force in health, well-being, identity, connection, and social life.
This 376-page work offers practitioners, academics, researchers, and policymakers an interdisciplinary framework for understanding how music functions across therapeutic, community, and cultural settings.

BEYOND THE THERAPY ROOM
Rather than treating music solely as a clinical tool, How Music Helps considers how musical experiences move through everyday life. It explores the ways music can support participation, connection, expression, and transformation within individuals and communities.
The book offers a foundation for readers investigating music’s role across therapeutic practice, social research, public health, community programs, education, and cultural policy. It is a theoretical and academic resource and should not be interpreted as a substitute for individualized medical or mental-health care.
